ADHD/ADD

Neurofeedback for ADHD/ADD

What causes ADHD/ADD symptoms?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD/ADD) causes impulsive behavior and inattentiveness that interferes with a patient’s ability to concentrate. A patient with ADHD/ADD has brain waves that are out of sync. They have too many theta brain waves and not enough beta waves. There are three different types of waves in your brain when we are awake: Alpha, Beta, & Theta.

Alpha: Occur in a relaxed state when the brain is not actively interacting or thinking

Beta: Occur during interactions that require concentration, problem-solving, and thinking

Theta: Occur when drowsy, daydreaming, or experiencing thoughtless, restless overactivity

Treatments for ADHD/ADD must focus on “normalizing” brain waves to accurately achieve balance. Because stimulants like Adderall increase dopamine and norepinephrine levels, it helps patients normalize brain activity. But neurofeedback treatment is an excellent alternative or complementary therapy to stimulants as it helps retrain brain activity naturally.

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive treatment that encourages the brain to develop healthier patterns of activity. It is a therapeutic technique that utilizes real-time feedback of brainwave activity to train and regulate brain function. Through the use of the (qEEG) Evoke individuals receive auditory or visual cues that encourage the brain to produce desired brainwave patterns. Over time, this training can lead to improved self-regulation, cognitive performance, emotional well-being, and symptom management.

What does neurofeedback achieve?

Neurofeedback therapy increases the brain’s frontal lobes responsible for concentration, multi-tasking, and attention. The patient learns how to create brainwaves that keep them focused and calm to reduce hyperactivity, impulsive behavior, and distractibility. The therapy naturally strengthens and retrains the brain to treat ADHD/ADD. It allows behaviors to change and have a long-lasting impact to last a lifetime. While medications can correct imbalances in neurotransmitters, alleviate symptoms, and improve the overall quality of life for those suffering with ADHD/ADD, the integration of medication and neurofeedback training is The Synergistic Approach that capitalizes on the strengths of both methods.
