The Amazingly Powerful Brain
What is the most important discovery about your brain ever?
Its Neuroplasticity.
Brain plasticity, or neuroplasticity, is a big and strange word for most people. When I hear the word “plastic”, I immediately think of a ziplock sandwich baggie. However, brain plasticity is a neuroscientific term referring to your brain’s ability to change at any age for better or worse. It is crucial to understand the importance of this unique ability the brain has to shape who you are as a person and how you change over time.
Your brain forms a million new connections every second.
Let's take a moment and let that sink in! As you can imagine our everyday life experiences and thoughts are hugely important in making our brains what they are. Currently in society, we are struggling with the significant negative consequences of social isolation from the COVID 19 pandemic. In my opinion, many are suffering from deteriorating brain health due to social isolation. This is evident in the rapidly rising mental health crisis and the steep incline of Alzheimer's dementia. The Alzheimer's association has noted that by mid-century, the number of Americans age 65 and older living with Alzhemeimers is expected to grow to 13.8 million. This shows a drastic increase from the current 5.8 million who are currently living with Alzhemiers dementia. That is why brain health and cognitive wellness clinics are so important!
Scientists and holistic providers are becoming increasingly more interested by the forces that act on our brain:
our social interactions
environment
emotions
spiritual lives
These all have a significant impact in our brain health. You may be surprised to know that your brain is different now than when you started reading this!
The discovery that our thoughts can change the function and very structure of our brain is remarkable. Let’s work together to spread the word for hope and the ever important promotion of brain health!
